Helping children develop skills through play

The most important aim is that Playgroup should be fun and enjoyed by the children. Playgroup should be regarded as an extension of the home.

We aim not to teach but to provide a safe, stimulating environment where, in the company of caring adults, children can learn through play and so enhance their social, physical, intellectual and emotional development so that they start school with confidence, eager and ready to learn.

Activities Provided for the Children

All activities are provided to encourage children to initiate there own learning through play.

To encourage the children to try new things and to feel safe to make mistakes within a safe and encouraging environment.

These are a small selection of activities that we provide:

  • Writing Table
  • Book Corner/Cosy Area
  • Creative Area
  • Small World
  • Sensory Play
  • Role Play
  • Physical Play

Pre-School Activity Sessions

During Pre-school sessions we aim to help children with the transition into school by encouraging them in tasks they will need once they begin reception class, such as:

  • Eating lunch themselves
  • Using the toilet and washing hands
  • Playing alongside peers and developing social skills
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Language and communication skills
  • Learning is fun

The Pre-school sessions are more structured in that the children are welcomed and they place their lunch boxes on their colour group tables. Children are then split into colour groups to use the toilet/ wash hands and have a story or sing, which is followed by:

  • Lunch
  • Free play
  • Rainbow corner circle time
  • Focused activity
  • Tidy up time
  • Garden time
  • Treasure box
  • Home Time 2:45pm

Lunch Boxes

Each child will need to bring a lunch box to each pre-school session they attend. We eat lunch in colour groups and ask that their lunches are prepaired so that children can try to open any boxes or containers themselves. We offer milk or water to drink, but many children like to bring their own for lunch.

Lunch Box Idea

Cheese cubes and ham with crackers, an apple and a yoghurt.
